Empowerment to me means to have the power within yourself to do something. It is a determination that you have to accomplish a goal or complete a task.
I believe that I have alot of empowerment because some of the things that I have over came. I didnt allow the obstacles that I face to set me back from my goal. I started having this mind set when I read "The Narrative of Frederick Douglass".
He said that slaves were content and was satisfied with being a slave. During this year in time young people become content and nout focus on school. I refuse to be content. I want to achieve more as a young African American.Young African Americans males my age would rather be on the street selling drugs instead of using that same determination into increasing there education. My peers are having unprotected sex and having babies at a young age and we wonder why older people say, “I don’t know what’s wrong with you teenagers these days.” Older people in this generation haven’t forgotten about the people who have walked many miles just so that we can get the same text book as a white student. And what do my peers do? My peers write in them marking profanity. I want my ancestors to know that I haven’t forgotten how far they came since chains and whips.
My path is different from other males in my generation because I have a mother that wants the best for me and pushes me to desire more in life. Because she has instilled this into my life I am determined to continue to this goal. I don’t think enough parents are in their children’s lives but yet they are disgusted with the choices they choose. I am glad that my mother is hard on me because I refuse to be another statistic. My mother is the foundation to my future and when it becomes time that I leave her household and be on my own she will be taken care and wont have to worry about nothing. I know that I don’t owe this to her but it is in my best interest that I do as my mother did for me.My mother has prepared me for the real world. She has disciplined me and taught me to make decisions that I will not regret in the future. From my mothers teachings I will be successful in the real world. I will have a job and pay my own rent in my home and not have to call and ask my mother for help or some assistance.

Solid response if a bit short, Reginald. I love the connection you make between your own zeal for empowerment and Frederick Douglass' desire not to be "content" with the lot given to him. I do wish that you'd offer more specifics about your experiences-- where they diverge from peers who might not be on such a positive path. The kind of detail and "personality" you can offer this blog will distinguish it from other positive brothas hoping to share uplifting and empowering experiences. What makes your path different from theirs? I feel like i cold read your statements and still know very little about you. Try to give us a little more... and remember 500-1000 words. (smile)
ReplyDeleteReggie,
ReplyDeleteIt's good to hear that you feel empowered a lot. This is half of the battle.......from here, you can achieve anything that you want to.
I like your reference to Frederick Douglass and his narrative.
I would have loved to hear more about specific experiences that you have had that made you feel empowered.
Your blog should really allow readers to get the "inside scoop" on Reggie and who he is and what makes him tick.
I agree with Mr. Tim'm, you need to make this blog stand out from the other "positive brothas" who create blogs.
I can't wait to read more of your entries.
this is wonderful. like ms Angela said i like the reference to Frederick Douglass and his narrative. and also i can't wait to read more
ReplyDeleteA really powerful update/revision Reggie, that really reveals a great deal more about your path and inspiration. Much improved!!!
ReplyDeleteI feel like I can relate a lot to this blog. My family reminds me a lot about how everything I am blessed with is only here for me because of my ancestor’s struggle. I’ve also seen first hand how terrible life can be if you live by the streets. I have cousins who were in and out of jail when they were my age, and now that they are older it is near impossible for them to find jobs so they end up going right back to whatever it was that landed them in jail. That’s why I’m glad that I too have a mother who wants only the best for me and always has my best interest and my safety in mind and isn’t hesitant to be hard on me.
