Empowerment to me means to have the power within yourself to do something. It is a determination that you have to accomplish a goal or complete a task.
I believe that I have alot of empowerment because some of the things that I have over came. I didnt allow the obstacles that I face to set me back from my goal. I started having this mind set when I read "The Narrative of Frederick Douglass".
He said that slaves were content and was satisfied with being a slave. During this year in time young people become content and nout focus on school. I refuse to be content. I want to achieve more as a young African American.Young African Americans males my age would rather be on the street selling drugs instead of using that same determination into increasing there education. My peers are having unprotected sex and having babies at a young age and we wonder why older people say, “I don’t know what’s wrong with you teenagers these days.” Older people in this generation haven’t forgotten about the people who have walked many miles just so that we can get the same text book as a white student. And what do my peers do? My peers write in them marking profanity. I want my ancestors to know that I haven’t forgotten how far they came since chains and whips.
My path is different from other males in my generation because I have a mother that wants the best for me and pushes me to desire more in life. Because she has instilled this into my life I am determined to continue to this goal. I don’t think enough parents are in their children’s lives but yet they are disgusted with the choices they choose. I am glad that my mother is hard on me because I refuse to be another statistic. My mother is the foundation to my future and when it becomes time that I leave her household and be on my own she will be taken care and wont have to worry about nothing. I know that I don’t owe this to her but it is in my best interest that I do as my mother did for me.My mother has prepared me for the real world. She has disciplined me and taught me to make decisions that I will not regret in the future. From my mothers teachings I will be successful in the real world. I will have a job and pay my own rent in my home and not have to call and ask my mother for help or some assistance.
